The A Level Program

Advanced Level Certificate, popularly known as A’ level, is a course designed and implemented by University of Cambridge, UK. It is equivalent to the 10+2 education under Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB), Nepal. The University of Cambridge, UK, established University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES) in the year 1858. Today, UCLES is the world leader in the field of educational assessment. Every year, more than one million candidates enter for the UCLES examination in over 150 countries. The reputation of UCLES examinations owes to the highest standard of accuracy and reliability offered by the University of Cambridge and the topmost recognition the degree enjoys in universities all over the world.

A’ level is internationally popular for the vast domain of subjects it offers, thus giving the students an option and advantage to choose from a wide range and variety of internationally relevant courses. The University of Cambridge A’ level curriculum offers as many as 73 (seventy three) subject combinations internationally. However, not all these subject combinations are offered all over the world. Different countries develop their own criteria as to which combinations to offer depending on the local demand and feasibility. There is no limitation or bar put by the University of Cambridge on the maximum number of subjects a student can take up at a time, but the University has definitely set up the minimum requirement. To be certified as an A’ level graduate, a student must clear three A level subjects and one AS level subject. A level subjects refer to those subjects  which are normally completed in two years’ time, and AS subjects get the credibility of one year study.

Although A’ level  study is more focused on Nepali context for getting easy access to reputed universities abroad for higher studies after the completion of the course, the student completing A level may very well continue further studies in Nepal itself in their relative field of choice. Being an internationally acknowledged course, all local universities of Nepal recognize the A’ level degree and A’ level students are eligible for doing any higher education course under the local university curriculum. The horizon of A’ level education is so broad that a student completing A’ level enjoys the immeasurable advantage of pursuing further studies anywhere in the world and can opt for any national and international course of personal choice.

Features of A-Level

The subject content of the A-Level syllabus is divided into two parts. The first part is taught in the first year of the course and forms the basis of the AS-Level qualification. Completion of the second part in the following year fulfills the requirements for A-Level.

AS and A-Level examinations use a variety of assessment techniques, but particular emphasis is placed on the use of externally-marked examination papers. Taking examinations successfully demands a high level of academic competence and the ability to organize knowledge and ideas to produce reasoned written answers. The course gives opportunity for individual research in several subjects and practical skills.

AS and A-Level are based on a practical curriculum that seeks to enable students to cope successfully with the demands of higher education. Courses are designed to encourage students to develop an independent approach to their work. The curriculum also encourages:

the development of practical thinking skills based on oral communication and knowledge acquisition.

-

an active approach to learning.

-

the use of initiative and creativity in problem-solving.

-

the application of skills and understanding.

-

the ability to undertake individual research and to work as part of a team.

This skill-based approach aims to provide a positive educational experience for students and teachers.
